Topics

The mainly idea of this course is introduce the students to the practical of new methods of fabrication. Using the installations of the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, even the specific softwares, that will be studied during the workshop. We believed that this experience will change, radically, in terms of how can we design, and produce, in the digital age.

During these 2 weeks the students are going to learn how to use digital technologies, following these exercises:

Case study. Research. One building, object, furniture, sculpture, etc. that was conceived, and fabricated, using digital techniques.
Develop in scale 1/1 a 2d and 3d milling strategy in FOAM, size: 1200 x 500 x 50 mm. The concept is free. Work in groups with around 3 students (from 2 to 4). Textures from the tools are welcome. The software RhinoCAM has also several strategies. The students must investigate some strategies and then present to the other students. Also creating tools they are going to understand how to program CNC machines. (first week)
Develop in scale 1/200 a tower model one object that will be milled in the AXYZ machine. During the practice classes different strategies will be studied. (second week)
The RhinoCAM, RhinoNEST, and Toolpath will be the most important software we are going to use. At the end of the course, the student supposed to know all the steps of the system we are going to create, like post-processors and so on.
We don’t have time during these 2 weeks to fabricate the models. After the workshop, we are going to schedule where each group is going to use the machine (3 hours per group).
During the course, you need to register all issues we are going to work. Use the SnagIt, for instance, to do that.

  1. Hello studiants, I am really happy to see that you are really engaged with the classes. Let's do our best. We need to prepare amazing models to Florence. Tomorrow we are going to start the 3d strategies. I appreciate your effort. Many, many thanks to Pablo Baquero, for all your help, always ready to give a really helpful hand.
    Best, Affonso ORCIUOLI.
